Well, from my 45+ years in the sign and print industry one of my discoveries is just like the hidden gold, silver, coal and precious gems we also have hidden gems, wisdom, knowledge, concepts and a myriad of amazing solutions to those unsolved problems we encounter daily. My revelation came about after about 20 years operating our sign and print business in Sydney. We engaged a consultancy company for what was a significant investment. WOW, we unlock literally huge benefits, profits, better people to people innovations – you name it and the doors opened including a 4 times increase in net profit!
We realised when you answer, “because we have always done things this way!” then you are living in yesterday. Therefore the real question is - “how do you unlock your future?”
Firstly, may I explain my observations and a simple viewpoint you may relate to – I believe it comes down to the eternal battle between Important and Urgent. Typically, IMPORTANT is the work, project or inward looking efforts in your business. They short and long term will make a direct impact positively to your business in the areas you focus on. The better the plan, engagement and delivery of important project have massive benefits.
Whereas – URGENT I suggest are a great many customers unplanned projects like “mate we forgot to order this sign and we need it by tomorrow?” Sure, you may charge a premium, you may make some instant profits BUT – lets assume it's a $1000 job and you achieved double that and you made net $1500 – I say Big deal. You also taught the customer you are a gun for higher anytime, a contractor not a logistics partner. They may even feel resentment for being overcharged? So, lets stop the post mortem and discuss why the $1500 isn’t that great – Well, simple answer its ONCE! While if the important internal project say solved a internal problem with ‘say” installations and you are going to save or make another $150 on every install – then the question is how many installs you do a month say 10 X $150 = $1500 OR importantly that $1500 per month x 12 months or $18,000 per year forever!
That's just one example how your busy, busy, rush, rush business style will keep you employed however my observations from those who know the difference is the difference between earning money or creating wealth.
Or in sign language – why one sign shops owner has the arse out of his pants and the ‘other” guy is driving new cars and having luxury holidays?
